In the post-independence era, there have been many changes in the Indian Education System. The scope of education has improved a lot. To a large extent, the Indian Education System has been successful at reaching the grass-root level. It is because of this spread of education in the last 75 years that today India is marching towards becoming a Superpower in the 21st century. It is imperative for our educational system to adopt some positive attitude to make this process easier.
Today progress in every sector is not measured just Nationally but Globally. The introduction of the ‘Global village’ concept makes the educational system to be in line with the changes taking place at global scale. Although Its main objective should be to take the Indian Social system to a new heights through a mantra of “Think Globally, Act Locally”.
It is necessary to create an educational system that enables people to deal with complex questions such as Impact of Modern Technology on Human Life in future, fears of employment loss due to introduction of machines etc.
While talking about Today’s education system, It is necessary to develop an education system based on the approach which shall be based on the study about what is going to happen in the next 10 years instead of changes that happen in the next 2-3 years. At the same time there is an urgent need for an education system which deals with issues related to human life such as impact of climate change & water scarcity caused by it, depletion of natural resources etc. It is imperative that the curriculum of the Universities should be related to these questions.
Many times, we heard that the Indian education System lacks Research-oriented approach, but on-contrary , we all know that Indians are leading in the research field in the western world. So, it is necessary that efforts should be made to develop a Research-oriented approach from school level itself. It is necessary to adopt an education system that cultivates Curative/Investigative attitude among students in the student-centric educational system.
Presently In India, except for some specific Universities, the traditional education system is being adopted. By adopting the inter-disciplinary, Credit based Education system which is already part of World-over university , the doors of opportunities will open for Indian students & their overall development will take place.
While making these changes at higher education, it is necessary to make a real change in the Primary, Secondary & Higher secondary level education. It is necessary to give more weightage to Practical education instead of only bookish knowledge. Also while imparting school education, if skills of individual students have been identified and accordingly skill training given to them to utilize the resources available for livelihood at local geographical regions, then we can be in a position to resolve the current problem of shortage of skilled manpower. For example in many cities today due to the large influx of youth from village areas put a lot of pressure on civic amenities. Today as many of the Villages, Taluka places are being developed which are in need of skill manpower for activities like road construction, Irrigation, Electricity supply, Internet, Modern Agriculture, Small-scale Industries etc. so the school education system is responsible to provide this skilled manpower. Due to persistent efforts of the Government of India, the next generation can certainly get the right direction if skill education is being implemented at government schools like Zilla Parishad & Municipality schools. Along with technology & research based modern education systems, socially related & regionally based education systems are the need of the hour.
Various issues faced by today’s society such as Crime against women, Materialism, Unethical behaviors in many sectors etc. can be resolved by the introduction of ‘Value based education’ system. The modern Indian education system should be based on scientific Indian Shastras and should cultivate universal values.
Today, while working in the field of education, I strongly feel that in the coming future the concept of Rabindranath Tagore’s philosophy of Shantiniketan & development of the education system with global values based on aforementioned Indian shastra should be the true direction of Indian education.
